Prime Time Production By Carolyn Giardina

Post Optimism
With the threat of strikes behind them and production for the 2001-2002 TV season underway, post house execs also show growing enthusiasm about HD. ?It?s beginning to be a really exciting season in HD for us,? reported Leon Silverman, executive VP of Laser Pacific, Los Angeles, who adds that about 40 percent of the company?s work this season is scheduled for HD postproduction.

A somewhat cautious Joshua Touber, COO of Livewire Television Group (which includes Encore Hollywood, Hollywood Digital, Riot Santa Monica, Riot Manhattan and Burbank-based Level 3 Post), said, ?The mood in facilities based in TV is reserved optimism. We have solid lineups and a wider acceptance of HD. Though the U.S. economy has caused a temporary reduction in spot advertising, which has slightly dissipated some of these gains for the short run ? the long run is looking better than it used to.?
Indeed, the commercial production industry, having never completely bounced back from last year?s six-month SAG/AFTRA strike against the advertising industry, continues to struggle in today?s economic climate.

On the episodic TV front, Laser Pacific expects to be posting at least 15 series in HD this season, Silverman reported at press time. Although he declined to name the shows, it is reasonable to assume that Laser would again handle returning CBS series that it posted in HD last season. These titles include Touched by an Angel, Becker, Judging Amy, King of Queens and Everybody Loves Raymond.

When it comes to choosing between Plasma and LCD, it's important to shop in the mindset that one high-def TV is not necessarily better than another - rather, it's a question of which one is right for you.
