Intermec's New 2435 Handheld Computer is Tough Enough for the Rough Stuff Protects 2400 Series investment and compatibility By DMN Staff Writer Companies looking for an alternative to their existing wide-screen handheld data collection terminals now have another choice, and Intermec customers who already are using Intermec's 2400 Series of handheld computers now have a new option. The 2435, introduced October 1, is packed with all the same features that made the 2400 Series Intermec's most popular industrial handheld computer, and more.

Constructed around the same rugged industrial design and versatile configurations that have made the 2400 Series computer an integral part of today's enterprises, the 2435 includes a new, ergonomic design that makes the 2435 comfortable for day-long use.

The 2435 features a bright, high-contrast 31-character, LCD display that makes long part numbers easy to read, eliminating the need to wrap text to the next line, or providing pixel screen displays 50 percent more characters than other 2400 Series terminals.

With keypad buttons that are larger and more widely dispersed than other industrial terminals, the 2435 makes it easier for workers with gloved hands to enter information quickly and accurately.

The 2435 was developed based on input from key Intermec customers. "Our customers told us they needed a larger display in an easy-to-use ergonomic design. Intermec listened," said Jeff Hovorka, Intermec product manager. "The 2435 incorporates these suggestions while still protecting our customers' technology investments by using industry-standard tools and uniform application development environments across the entire 2400 Series."

With its large, scratch-resistant display, IP54 sealed case, internal antenna, and a rugged polymer case able to withstand multiple drops on a concrete floor, the 2435 is designed to operate reliably in harsh environments such as warehouses, manufacturing facilities and retail distribution centers where system uptime is crucial for productivity. Its industrial-level confirming audio allows users to hear the unit over the noise typically found in a warehouse. Its lighter weight, less than 26 ounces with battery, should appeal for retail in-store use as well.

A Lithium-ion battery provides more than eight hours of communication options include integrated Wi-Fi certified 802.11b and optional 2.4 GHz OpenAir radios.

Familiar Design, Improved Ergonomics Minimize Training and Migration Costs

An integrated laser scanner with side-mounted scan button allows one-handed operation, which gives users the ability to collect data on the run. An optional removable pistol grip with scan trigger button offers another option for easy data capture.

The 2435 shares a common application development environment with the rest of the 2400 Series computers so customers can port applications already written for these devices directly to the 2435, eliminating the need to write new code. All 2400 Series computers support Microsoft C programming for client-server applications.

Factory configuration options include VT/ANSI or IBM terminal emulation. With Intermec's dcBrowser(tm) application development environment, text-based web browsing also is available. This provides customers the means to move from conventional terminal emulation toward HTML programming standards.
