In a move guaranteed to cause huge interest and debate, domain names like bondibeach.com.au, portdouglas.com.au, margaretriver.com.au, or broome.com.au are just some of the tens of thousands of geographic domain names that may be available soon, allocated by auDA, the industry regulator of .au domain names. Applicants will be awarded by using a system of individual ballots.
auDA say that examples of organisations that may benefit from obtaining geographic domain
names include:
- Businesses that operate in particular suburbs or sales territories whether they are in Rose Bay or Alexandria
- Brands that carry names of particular suburbs by chance or by design
- Organisations that operate community-based websites
If the idea of this captures your fancy, to lodge your interest in a geographic domain name, Melbourne IT have created a system to apply and also keep you informed. Simply follow the instructions below:
1. Go to
http://www.melbourneit.com.au/augeographicnames.html?cmpid=EMC-AUGEO200505
2. Enter the geographic domain name you want in the Names by Request search box. Note: As the names have not yet been allocated, they will be listed currently as unavailable.
3. Proceed using Names by Request to lodge your expression of interest.
In the coming weeks, and before the release of the geographic domain names, Melbourne IT say they will inform you of the price, the relevant terms and conditions, the eligibility rules and the selection process.
If you need more information or wish to discuss how geographic domain names can benefit your business, Melbourne IT have set up a hotline on 1300 654 677 (option 1).
This scribe somehow however, thinks this idea may be a rather large bone of contention, and waits with interest to see the public outcry this will surely bring!
