Learning, Testing the Boundaries of New Content Production
Content Insider #496 - VR Progress
VR film work - educational, documentary, entertainment and even marketing - has grown faster than the pioneers expected and it's only getting better and more exciting. All of the tools are getting better, faster, less expensive faster than industry forecasters predicted. Try even the basic (cheap) tools and you'll understand why once you watch it you want more. The good shooters and producers are delivering for the immersion hungry audience and learning that while it's great it doesn't meet everyone's needs the same way. The VR filmmakers are more than just creative in what they deliver, they're creative in how they get from concept to something you can don an HMD and enjoy. They're doing a lot of work-around activity to satisfy an increasingly sophisticated audience. Read More

Content Insider #494 - VR Film Work
Content Insider #494 - VR Film Work
Shooting, producing a VR film sounds terribly romantic. Heck filmmaking itself sounds like a whale of a lot of fun rubbing elbows with studio bigwigs, stars, living the fast life...what could be a better way of making a fab living? Ask most filmmakers and they'd probably say just about anything would be more "fun" because it's a lot of work juggling everything to educate, entertain your audience. VR film production is even worse because you're venturing into a totally new area where the viewer suddenly is part of the action and if you think actors are unpredictable viewers are worse. And there's no safety net because it's a new frontier. Hard, exciting but talented people are mastering the new arena for people to enjoy. Read More

DP Vance Burberry Captures the Darkness and Light of Infidelity and Reconciliation
DP Vance Burberry Captures the Darkness and Light of Infidelity and Reconciliation
How does one go from working in theater in Australia, to working as a lighting designer for national U.S. rock concert tours, to working as an electrician on film sets, to becoming a successful DP having shot music videos for Guns N' Roses, Pearl Jam, Santana, Coldplay, Brad Paisley and more? For DP Vance Burberry, it was a natural progression. While Vance now shoots a variety of projects, including commercials, short films, feature films and documentaries, music videos hold a special place for him given his history in the music business. It's why he said yes, when his good friend and director Jessie Hill approached him to DP Australian alternative pop singer-songwriter and producer Jarryd James' music video for his song "1000x" ft. Broods. Read More

Content Insider #493 - VR Filmmaking
After a bumpy start VR filmmaking is starting to move forward. The craftspersons have and continue to do a lot of testing and refinement to find out what works, what doesn't and why. Along the way they're getting a lot of help from camera, system and tool producers to deliver consumers can immerse themselves in and enjoy again and again. The costs are already coming down as more and more filmmakers work with the new medium. Momentum is building and it's needed if HMD and solution producers are to sell the volumes we need to deem it a success. The good stuff is really good. The rest...not so much. Read More

Content Insider #492 - SMPTE Power Play
SMPTE may hold it's technical conference in Hollywood but it's not about the glamour (ok maybe a little) it's all about making better stuff that will entertain you and others. All the good tools are in the cloud to keep costs under control more people are working in the cloud and storing content there - especially for backup of the backup and archiving. VR is now on everyone's to-do list but no one is overpromising. No one wants another '3D is the killer' message flying around. The people who are doing it seriously and well are doing it right and it's awesome. Computer, storage and HMD producers are waiting for the list of titles to grow. SMPTE just wants the standards to be fairly firm so the expectations and quality is what viewers expect. Read More

Content Insider #491 - IBC Wrap
AT&T wants to be a content player. They can read the writing on the wall, the world is going video and they don't want to be just another dumb pipe (they need to add value to what they do). If you're a big house like Times Warner you live in the cloud for your production and your distribution. If you're an independent filmmaker you keep your content in the storage device next to your desk and maybe use the cloud for 2nd or 3rd backup and work with the content distributors to monitize your material in their cloud. According to folks at IBC this year is that the challenge for everyone in the industry is to effectively reach the consuming public without overwhelming them. Remember teens millenials and Gen Zers have short attention spans. Read More

Content Insider #489 - OTT, Crafty Strength
More devices, more screens means more opportunities for content owners to move more entertainment material to consumers. I don't have to tell you that the world of content is going OTT to folks by-passing traditional channels. Cable companies and networks are struggling to adjust to the new (young) creative viewer while still deliver predictable news/information/entertainment to older folks...and trying to make money on all of them for their advertisers and their bosses. It's tough to jump to the next level of media & entertainment when you're uncertain how you're going to turn a profit. But my kids could care less about the delivery folks profit as long as they get their content when they want it, where they want it, how they want it. Read More

Pocket Cinema Camera and DaVinci Resolve Used on Panic At The Disco's "Don't Threaten Me With a Good Time" Music Video
Pocket Cinema Camera and DaVinci Resolve Used on Panic At The Disco's
Panic at the Disco is on top of the music world with a massive worldwide tour supporting their album, "Death of a Bachelor," that debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. One of the most popular songs on the album is "Don't Threaten Me With a Good Time." The song's music video puts the band's lead singer, Brendon Urie, in some very uncomfortable situations after a night of drinking and dancing. Uncomfortable as in an "aliens/monsters are trying to eat me" type of situation. But what makes the video unique is that it is shot from the viewpoint of the attacking beast. Initially taking on the form of a human female, the video follows both Brendon and his attacker as they meet in a bar and dance through the night, .until the evening ends badly for Mr. Urie.
